Moving domain names
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:09:47 PM »
Does anyone here have any experience of moving domains?

I've got http://mysurvivalchecklist.net and I've just bought the .com version (somebody let it lapse). Is there anyway of migrating over that won't affect SEO that you know of?

Thanks,

Matt

I'm in the middle of it now, as I write. Luckily, Heidi gave me the advice of giving myself 2 weeks for the change. You might want to ask her.

Different things.

Mil is transferring her domain name service from on company to another.  Not overnight.

Matt has .net domain name as .com wasn't available until now.   Now that he has it he wants to use the .com domain keeping while keeping whatever page ranks, search engine rankings he has already built up.

Easiest thing to do is to keep it all on .net and redirect .com to .net  so when someone types in the .com they still find you.   If you really want to move things over to .com  then move your site to the new domain name, redirecting the old one, all links to the new domain name.

Thanks all, great advice. I think I'll transfer over to the .com but it's not a priority at the moment.

Thanks again.
