Subscribe buttons on my website
« on: June 03, 2012, 11:00:49 PM »
Hi everyone,
My website has been up for about 3 months. I am getting ready for my 11th weekly podcast episode and I am in iTunes, Zune, Blackberry and Blueberry directories. I will submit my feed to Stitcher soon. I have been looking at SUBSCRIBE plug ins, but I am not sure what to use. My site is using the Thesis theme. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks
 again,
Tom at Jesusfreaktrucker.com

The easiest thing to do is to use the text widget and create your own image links if you know HTML. Use Iconfinder to find icons.

The easiest you can do for now is to create a new link category "subscribe" and add all your links to it and only display that category in the sidebar widget. You won't get any icons but it's easier.

You can check out this outdated plugin

Great question.  Here has been my solution:

I downloaded JetPack for WordPress (outside of this it does a ton of crap).

I went to Widgets in Appearance and added the "Image (JetPack)" widget where I wanted it in my sidebar.

I downloaded my desired icon (e.g. iTunes logo) from iconfinder and uploaded it to my site through Media Library in WP.

I copied and pasted the address of the icon I had just uploaded into the Widget under Image URL, clicked the "Center" in the "Image Alignment" section and then resized it to 30 x 30 in the "Height and Width" sections.

Then I added my Apple Subscription URL in the "Link URL" spot but any link can go here.
For example: "http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-family-podcast-network/id533042848"

Then I hit "Save."

If you want to see an example check out my site at http://thefamilypodcastnetwork.com and look at the "Listen to FPN on Your Device!" section.

I'll have to check and see if Jetpack and Thesis get along. Thanks for the info. It looks good.

For adding social profile buttons on your sidebar, there are several plugins you can use.

I like social sharing toolkit.  http://boomerempowerment.com/wordpress101/share-button/  It also will add share buttons to your posts, etc.

As for basic code, which is needed if you want to do more than cut and paste into your widget are see http://boomerempowerment.com/wordpress101/basic-html-codes-wordpress/

Heidi,

I'm still doing some configuration on my site and after watching your videos on Social Sharing Toolkit, I switched mine over to that one.

Thanks for the info!
