Five Minutes With Jack archives
« on: April 11, 2012, 07:48:24 AM »
Hey guys,

I was a bit frustrated that I couldn't access more than the 10 latest episodes of Five Minutes With Jack via my phones podcast software (BeyondPod on Android), so I threw together a PHP script to get all episodes since #1 in one feed.

It's at http://magnuswikhog.com/podcastarchives/fmwj.rss (or http://tinyurl.com/fmwj-rss to make it easier to enter on your phone). The feed is updated once a day. There's also one for The Survival Podcast at http://magnuswikhog.com/podcastarchives/tsp.rss (or http://tinyurl.com/tsp-rss).

Maybe there's another way to access all episodes using a podcast app that I am not aware of, if there is please tell me (in which case I just wasted a couple of hours of my time :-[ ). Otherwise, this might be helpful to others looking for easy access to older episodes.

PS. The eipsode names for FMWJ are all like "Episode-1- Five minutes with jack", because that's the naming of the actual audio files. The TSP audio files are named differently, so the TSP episodes contain a short description of the episode topic, which will show up in the RSS feed. Of course, I could've gone overboard and grabbed both the names and show notes from the blog posts, but it just didn't make sense from a TROTI (Time returned On Time Invested) perspective...

There's a Android app for TSP episodes.  Works good on my phone.  Maybe we can get the author to include these shows also.

TheSwede,

I enjoy using your feed. Is it possible to add the title of the podcast to each episode?
It would make finding a specific show so much easier.

Thanks again,

Joshuab

I was just thinking this morning about where this post was and it popped up for me again. Thanks for doing that.

I'm using the android app for the TSP shows.  It WOULD be nice to have these on the app also.

Hey again guys,

thanks for the positive feedback! I put in a couple of hours of PHP programming and came up with two improved RSS feeds complete with title, description, link to each blogpost, sorted with newest on top and including all blogposts, not just podcasts... I even threw in a fancy image for each feed!

Five Minutes With Jack Archives
http://www.magnuswikhog.com/podcastarchives/fmwj_new.rss
http://tinyurl.com/fmwj-rss-new

The Survival Podcast Archives
http://www.magnuswikhog.com/podcastarchives/tsp_new.rss
http://tinyurl.com/tsp-rss-new

I'll keep the old versions running as well. Everything updates once an hour now, so there shouldn't be more than a maximum of one hour delay between a new episode coming out and showing up in the feed.

By the way, today was my lucky day - when I went to tinyurl.com I was the 999 999th visitor and won $20 000! (I was also the 1 000 000th visitor... simultaneously...  ;) )

I'm using BeyondPod as well and it seems to have pulled down a lot more than 10 episodes. I listen daily though, so I may not have noticed the issue myself :D

Not that I use the rss subscription myself, but it's great that you've done that! Great community work!
