Wordpress backup solution
« on: January 03, 2012, 10:48:13 PM »
I am looking for a solution to back up my entire site. I want everything saved - and total data/files are in excess of 20gb's. Nope- no porn. Sorry.

Any recommendations and costs?

Thanks,

Rourke

The Cpanel with my host (hostmonster) has a backup option and I just download it to an external hard drive.  You could always do it with ftp but it would be time consuming and not compressed.

Thanks for the reply.

I have used FTP in the past - hoping to find something online that could handle the size.

Also - if anyone knows the specific directories that should be backed up - please put it here.

Thanks everyone -

Rourke

I love Snapshot Backup and or Back WPup

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backwpup/

I like the link above because it will let me backup to the cloud and or other FTP servers if I want.  It grabs files and the database.

One of my favorite backup plugins is updraft.  It backups the database, theme, plugins, uploads.  These backups can be to a cloud service.  Automatic or manual.   I've got mine set to manual and autoback database through wp database manager.  I like my autobackups emailed to a google email address set aside for that purpose, but larger databases can't be emailed.  http://boomerempowerment.com/wordpress101/updraft-backups/

I like the BackupWordpress plugin. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backupwordpress/

It backs up everything including the MySQL database into a zip file for you. You can also setup automatic backups!

If you have a good host you can create backups from the hosts control panel. If you have a really good host they will provide you be able to let you restore from any point in time from backups they have automatically made every day. DreamHost does this and it is one reason I stay with them.

Just FYI

Dreamhost backups are not guaranteed.

Also never leave your backups on your host.  Leave them in the cloud or on your machine.  I had a clients site go down after a storage failure at dream host.

They leave there backups on the same storage array as your site.  So if your site goes POOF then so do your backups.

Never trust a host, any host.

Good idea. I will start copying those .zip files to my NAS. I also agree that you should never rely on a hosts backups. Thats why I installed the plugin.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the necropost, but I thought this subject was the best one to answer my question. I have tried some of the suggestions in this thread, but stopped because the plugins keep wanting to use my personal Facebook Page instead of my business Facebook page. Am I doing something wrong or are some plugins better for this than others? I am pretty new to this, so be gentle :-). For reference I am using my own domain on wordpress.

@rutger  I've not seen a plugin which required to use facebook page of either kind for a backup plugin
are you using the wordpress.com site with your domain name instead of a hosting service such as hostgator?

To all: I have a new favorite after finding awesome article on backing up wordpress
