Looking for feedback on a new look for my site
« on: January 07, 2013, 02:41:43 PM »
I am working on a new look for my site.  I have a dev version up at: http://testing.themusclecarguy.net/
I am looking for some feedback on the basic layout and colors.  I know I need to update the mailing list subscribe box.

I am also looking for a different plugin that has the floating links to facebook, twitter etc.  I am looking for one that has the icons vertically, and allows for a little text blurb on what it, like please follow me.

I am also still working on something for a background image instead of just the gray color.

One last question, I need to attribute the image in the header, do you think the text I have at the bottom would be sufficient?

Any feedback would be great, thanks.

Heidi

Play with the colors some more, I want to see a hint of red to go with your taillights.  See the following link where I changed the sidebar to a darker color and changed some link colors red.  I also changed links in the sidebar to match the colors in your navigation menu.  Pulls the site together.

vs what you have now:

If you decide to use a background image, you may to do that first, it may change what other colors you decide to use.  I'd also take the pink out of the footer (bottom of page).  Or you may want to try weaver II's sub-themes such as ivory drive.

In the weaver II admin, go to main options then footer.  Check the powered by box.

Another tip on Weaver, if using an seo plugin, and you should, go to advanced options then seo and check the use seo plugin box.

Thanks for the feedback.  I should have tried that out first.  The ivory drive theme looks good, I just changed the layout to match what I want.

Heidi's word is trumps all as far as I'm concerned, but I would like to address this photo issue.  A quick Google search produced a series of articles that cover Flickr, or more importantly, CreativeCommons Licensing.

This is the simplest explanation I can find to help you determine IF you can use it:  http://www.seosmarty.com/flickr-creative-commons/

If you decide to use it, the appropriate way to credit is to name the individual and hyperlink to the photo.  Here is a post I did some time ago with several examples.   http://thoughtsfromme.com/2012/06/occupy-wall-street-will-they-wake-up-now/

You'll notice that I used several photos from one individual so I hyperlinked his name to his main profile and a description of each image to the exact image location.  There may also be a clause in CC license that allows an owner to specify where you must credit your photos.  I've had people find photos of theirs and write to me asking me to re-direct the hyperlink to their personal website.  All that can get confusing but you're covered if you do what I've done and they'll have to ask you to change the link.

Recommendations:

1) for future reference, you can search Flickr specifically with the CC license you want.
2) I would attempt to contact the owner of that image and get their permission.  If it's set for an appropriate CC license they can't say "no" but they may be willing to work with you on the crediting.

As it stands right now, I would say that is NOT acceptable within CC license.

Hope this helps

For the header image, I contacted the photographer directly, and he approved the new site layout and the notation at the bottom.

I will keep that in mind for future use of Flickr images though.
