Affiliate programs suck
« on: September 18, 2012, 07:51:47 AM »
I'm pretty disappointed with product affiliate programs in general. I've got three - Amazon, a piece of gun database software, and an ammo retailer. I make a little bit with Amazon (~$25/month), and virtually nothing with the other two. Maybe it's that I don't continuously push the products, but I want to spend my time talking about interesting gun stuff, not plugging someone else's product all day. Has anyone actually had good results with a product affiliate? Anything special you've done to get there?

I'm pretty sure that (no surprise, really) the best way to actually make money is with direct relationships with reader/customers. Selling my own eBook or DVD, or having a paid members' club like Jack does.

There are two ways to make "white hat" money online.

1. Traffic thanks to SEO
2. Become an authority and build a community

Be thankful that you don't live in Connecticut. Companies that do not have a brick and mortar place of business in the state are required to charge sales tax to its residents because the state said the companies have a retail presence through the affiliates. No more affiliate program with Amazon or Overstock. Haven't found any others. Connecticut=The Tax You to Death State.

Ouch - and my blog is probably also flat-out banned in CT because of excessive gun content.  :P

I'm sure there's a good reason to live on the east coast, but I can't think of it offhand... ;)
