Physical Address
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:15:55 AM »
Hi All,
I wanted to set up an email service and decided it would be best for me to us the free Mailchimp service to get started. I was filling out the account info for Mailchimp and I came to the part where it required a physical address, which I entered. Upon testing an email, I realized that it gave the address out to the subscribers. I am not comfortable with this. I subscribe to many things and I have made it a point to look for physical addresses in the update emails. I noticed that the one's that say powered by Google use Google's address. Does anyone know what service this could be or another that doesn't do this?

Thanks,

Carl

I use Subscribe2 which is a free WordPress plugin. You set exactly what it says on the email. No address required. It comes with default messages, that's what I use, but it is easily changed.

I use subscribe2 as well, and for my needs it works perfectly.  But I'm not trying to do things on the scale that MailChimp can...

I use Subscribe2 as well. I am moving to MailChimp or Aweber soon.

I found that Subscribe2 doesn't always email the whole list. Just FYI

I like it when it works. Good for a free product

Physical address is required by LAW in your commercial email lists.

That is why Aweber and Mailchimp ask you for the physical address.

I cheat a little bit by putting a PO Box in mine.

If you don't include a physical address you're in violation of the "CAN SPAM ACT".  Now can you get away with it? Perhaps.  However you could also get your list or your server shut down... or you could get a fine by the government.

The reason professional business people use services like Mailchimp and Aweber is because they help keep us all compliant. They keep track of all the laws and make sure we're in compliance so we don't have to keep up with this stuff on our own.

Thanks benfitts!
My first thought was to go get a PO Box. I probably will go that route as my subscribers grow.  I am not trying to get away with anything, I just do not want to give everyone that subscribes for updates my home address. I have not monetized my site at all. By using Subscribe2, that does not include a physical address, am I still breaking the law?

Humblemechanic,
How did you know that Subscribe2 did not send emails to your whole list?

Yep ... Agree with benfitts. I also use a PO Box with MailChimp. I'm not sure about where you are but around here the price varies quite a bit by post office. I got mine for $36 a year ... plus they will charge you for the keys but that is a one time fee (unless you lose your keys).

With Subscribe2 you can edit it to say anything you want.

I just added a couple line to one of mine about the members page on that site. You could easily add in your address at the bottom.
