General Business Issues and Ideas / Re: Facebook Friends
« on: April 27, 2014, 09:45:43 AM »
My general way of dealing with this is that it's someone I've interacted with in the past and seems like someone I'd like, I accept.  You're right about FB changing a lot lately.  I've just decided that anything even remotely personal doesn't need to be on FB anymore, so I don't really worry about who sees my stuff on FB.

WordPress Wizardry / CSS Sprites
« on: February 19, 2014, 04:37:07 PM »
Basically, does anyone have any experience with these.  I've been really digging down into the grinds on how to optimize my sites images.  I've come a long way, but sprites seem to be the next step.

I have used SpritePad to generate the sprites and the generic css that I should need, but I'm having trouble implementing it.  Sure, it's easy when you're throwing it up on a text editor, but actually implementing it into WP seems to be giving me a hard time.  I'm also not sure if I'll be able to overlap where the links originally were or if I'm going to need to hard code in the HTML to go along with the sprites.

Basically, if anyone has any experience using sprites, I'd appreciate a little guidance.

Thanks,

Jason

Hey Quebecker,

Not sure why you're posting that here.  I recommend starting a new thread next time.

I can't imagine you needing to edit code on a social media plugin.  Of course, I can't imagine using a social media plugin that's specific to Facebook.  Try looking for a more general social media plugin.  Also, check the details before installing anything if you're not already.  I haven't seen a dedicated Facebook plugin in a while and would definitely want to know how old it is.

I'm not huge on Twitter, but it is a great tool.  Start off with friends that have it.  See if you can't get a few to re-tweet.  Then start searching for keywords and following people who match your niche.  It should start to roll from there.  You can also use twitter by searching for questions other's have in your niche (photography right?).  I'm more of an amateur / hobby photographer so I may sound completely ignorant here, but you can search for questions like "which mode on my new DSLR is best?"  If you reach out to that person and answer the question, you're building brand credibility and people will generally reciprocate by following and such.

Sorry it's taken so long to get a response.  I'm one of the guilty parties who don't come in all that often anymore, but I have been in since you posted this and I just didn't come to this section.  All-in-all, I'd say your site looks great.  The only thing I might recommend is cleaning up a little clutter.  For example, you have the "Share This" buttons on the homepage.  I might consider getting rid of them there, because who's actually going to share before they've opened and read your post?  I would also consider getting rid of the tags from under your post.  The reason for this is that there's a lot of space under each post that is taken up by these things that are not really usable.  Maybe throw the tags off in the widget area so people can find older posts of interest.  I would want people to see as much of my content as possible on my home page.  If you can see the opening line or two of the second post it may encourage people to scroll down and become more engaged.

But that's really the only thing I can think of.  Looks like you're off to a great start.

I am wondering, however, why you stuck with WordPress.com instead of going self hosted.  My understanding is you have to pay WordPress.com more than hosting would cost to put ads on your site.  Just curious.

Good luck!

I just want to say I hope you figured this out.  I know it's been sitting here a while but I'm a Mac guy and really can't help you.  More moral support than anything.  Good luck.

Heidi's word is trumps all as far as I'm concerned, but I would like to address this photo issue.  A quick Google search produced a series of articles that cover Flickr, or more importantly, CreativeCommons Licensing.

This is the simplest explanation I can find to help you determine IF you can use it:  http://www.seosmarty.com/flickr-creative-commons/

If you decide to use it, the appropriate way to credit is to name the individual and hyperlink to the photo.  Here is a post I did some time ago with several examples.   http://thoughtsfromme.com/2012/06/occupy-wall-street-will-they-wake-up-now/

You'll notice that I used several photos from one individual so I hyperlinked his name to his main profile and a description of each image to the exact image location.  There may also be a clause in CC license that allows an owner to specify where you must credit your photos.  I've had people find photos of theirs and write to me asking me to re-direct the hyperlink to their personal website.  All that can get confusing but you're covered if you do what I've done and they'll have to ask you to change the link.

Recommendations:

1) for future reference, you can search Flickr specifically with the CC license you want.
2) I would attempt to contact the owner of that image and get their permission.  If it's set for an appropriate CC license they can't say "no" but they may be willing to work with you on the crediting.

As it stands right now, I would say that is NOT acceptable within CC license.

Hope this helps

I like it.  The only thing that really caught my attention was that I wasn't really sure where the products were for a moment.  That may be exactly what you were looking for, teacher first salesman second type deal.  I don't really have time right now to listen to the podcasts, but the look and feel of the site are nice.

Maybe someone else will be able to come up with some constructive criticism, but in case nobody does...  Good Work!

Well, it's been almost a year and I'm happy to say that I think I'm finally happy with the site.  Lots of learning, testing, breaking, forgetting, and re-learning.  Also some step ups to some premium products and support groups.

I still only have like 3 regular readers, but I'm finally happy with it and more comfortable sharing it with the world.  If anyone would care to take a once over, it would be greatly appreciated.  You guys rock!!!

I don't have any advice, but thank you for sharing!  Something to keep in mind for all of us.

You're trying to get me in trouble aren't you?  "Sure, you were looking at the plugins..."

I'm going to guess you've found what you were looking for because what you've got looks great and this an old-ish post.

The only real advice I was going to give before I checked out your site wasn't really great advice anyways, but I'll throw it out there.

Depending on your web browser, you can get add-ons and tools that will sometimes tell you what plugins are being used on a site.  Then if you find a blog that looks like what you are looking for you can open the tool and see which plugin they are using.  Other than that, a simple google or "add plugin" search will give you tons of list and you can youtube each for videos demonstrating their potential.

Unfortunately, it's hard to get really good advice on specific photo plugins via forums just do to the nature of describing a vision.

Looks great and good luck!!!

Thanks for taking the time to share you always helpful advice, Heidi.

I've already added commentluv and figure I'll give it a try for a while then try something else for a while.  Just see what works best.  I'm glad to know you're not having any problems with crap comments just for back links.  Still love to hear if anyone is using anything else that they'd care to brag about or complain about!

WordPress Wizardry / commentluv vs. livefyre vs... other?
« on: December 13, 2012, 01:17:56 PM »
On occasion I'll be scrolling through my RSS feeds, read a post, follow the comments, and find a commenter that has another article I want to read.  I know what you're saying...  "well duh!"  It just seems like lately I've been finding better comments and material and to some extent have been seeing better comment options.

So I want to improve such options on my own site.  I've always allowed do-follow and will be happy to do what I can to share the wealth so to speak.  I've come to the point where I'm happy with five visitors if that's five people who like my blog and I am NOT looking to drive traffic.  If that happens, great, but I don't want other backlink junkies drowning out the conversation.  What I really want is to allow those who take the time to read and put thoughtful comments to have some feedback to their own great work.

Both livefyre and commentluv seem to have some pros and cons.  So here I am asking you, the collective brilliance that is the 5MWJ community.  What do you use and WHY?  What are the pros and cons?  What would you recommend regardless of driving traffic?  Are some of the others out there just as good or better?

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom!

Glad to help.

#4 is a problem I'm having with my site as well.  It may very well work itself out with more content.  They just don't seem to be clearly distinct categories right now.

Best of Luck!

It looks like you're off to a great start.  I hope it's going well for you.  I almost hate to make some of the comments I'm going to make because I know I'm not perfect myself, but you want the feedback so here it is.

1) I don't like the black but I realize it matches the theme of what you're trying to do so I don't actually recommend changing it, I just had to get it off my chest to move past it.

2)  Your post titles aren't really explaining anything to me.  They seem less than generic.  For example, you have one titled "Get Ready!"  I completely blew by it before I even realized I was there to help you not for my own interest.  Catchy titles would definitely help.

3)  The organization is confusing, cluttered, and makes me not want to stick around.  You have some posts that are expanded and others that are not.  And there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.  Trying to put myself in your shoes, the only thing I can think of is that you are trying to catch people's attention with the pictures where the titles are not.
      - suggestion: go back through and select featured images for each post and then only set the most recent post to be fully open.  The image icon will still show to encourage the reader to open up and see the full picture and it will be far less confusing.

4)  I'm really not comprehending the distinction in the categories.  I understand that sometimes things fall into more than one category, but yours aren't really coming through clearly.  I especially don't understand the pictures category.  It really comes off as just filler.

5)  The Logo - for a cheap logo I went to Fiverr.com.  If you're not familiar the site, you pay people five dollars to do random little things.  I gave the person a description of what I wanted for mine and they made it.  They completely botched it the first time because they didn't speak English, but we worked through that and I'm really happy with how it turned out.  I meant for it to just be something I used until I could put money into a better one but it's grown on me and I love it.  Feel free to check it out at thisgringotravels.com

I hope these help.
