Does anyone know about or have experiance with Zen cart or tomato cart? I believe these are free and don't require any extra expenses.

Physical Products / Online store shopping cart
« on: February 21, 2013, 01:07:56 PM »
I am in the process of getting set up with a couple drop shoppers and want to launch an online store ASAP.

I have set up a subdomain for my store, but I am not sure what to do for my ecommerce software needs.

What is best, a WordPress plugin or a total solution? I would like to keep my monthly operating costs low, I really don't want a monthly fee. What do you guys suggest?

I use WP User Front end for my site CriminalProtectionZone.com. It works good. They can choose a category, add tags, and even use custom fields. It is simple to set up and use. I also use a profile builder to manage registrations.

WordPress Wizardry / Re: Why isn't my site ranked higher?
« on: December 03, 2012, 12:37:15 PM »
Yes I did think you were talking about a blog instead of a static site.

I'm not familiar with static sites. Have you thought about adding a blog to the site to help you climb in the rankings? A lot of business are adding blogs.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

First off I would go read everything on blogging that you can. I read 2-3 blogging articles each day.

Apply what you can and see fit to your own site. I use something from, or an article about once a week.

Even though I don't always use what I read, it teaches me other things and maybe one day those things I've read will be useful. Or I can take bits and pieces from several articles and combine them for a great idea.

Blogging is about experimentation. I just like to experiment lightly as I build my site. Others take a different approach.

That's great. I've been posting 6 a week for about 11 months. I miss
a day on occasion, but not often. I've went from about 3 hours for a 500 word article to around an hour on a 3-400 word article. The more you write the quicker and better you will get.

Keep up the good work.

« on: November 14, 2012, 10:06:11 AM »
Since Jack is taking a break from the show, what blogging blogs do you follow?

I read problogger.net just about daily.
I just joined their forum, (don't do it)
I read shoutmeloud.com on occasion
I also watch videos from Lisa on to make a website on YouTube

So what do you use?

What has happened with the master mind groups so far? I haven't seen anything new on here and was wondering if anyone was still doing them or whatever.

Getting Sponsors and Advertisors / Affiliates vs Direct Ad Sales
« on: November 06, 2012, 01:44:04 PM »
What is your guys opinion on the two?

I have had several people buy ads as their businesses were starting up, then stop renewing the ad when they start affiliate programs. They then try to get me to join their programs. I see this as free advertising for them. What are your thoughts?

I do have an Amazon affiliate account which I use, but I'm thinking that another one would just be another hassle. So in your opinion is it best to join their program or say no and find a advertiser that is willing to pay?

As most of us here begin to build small businesses with our blogs we need to think about backups for power and internet failures. As your blog grows you become more connected to it and the internet. What is your plan if either the power or internet fail.

This is a reality I am facing and I one day hope to do as Jack, and so many other bloggerss have and step away from a job to blog full time.

So what is your backup for a power or internet failure?

Social Networking Nirvana / Re: Facebook Likes

I finally got around to creating a ghost account for Facebook.

Once I created the new Facebook profile for Mr John Dough and liked my pages I added him in as an administrator. Since this I have been able to like pages and other stuff. I'm glad its finally working properly.

Search Engine Marketing / Search engine not picking up posts
« on: October 14, 2012, 06:25:45 PM »
I signed up for Google alerts several months ago to track my brand. I have recently noticed that I am not getting the daily alerts.

I then Googled a few of my recent blog post titles and they did not show up on Google. My site map plugin is still building sitemaps and submitting them to Google. I am not doing anything different in seo and am using the all in one seo plugin still.

Does anyone know why Google isn't picking up my new posts?

According to awstats I'm getting 500 visitors a day as an average. I'm not on Facebook much and have about 40 likes. I'm on Twitter about as much as I'm awake. I have around 1700 followers. Since the contest has ended I have had around 50 try to enter. I finally took down the form so no one else will try.

For my next attempt I want at least 1200 visitors according to awstats. I would also test the market with smaller contests, even if you have to come up with the prize on your own.

I recently tried the contest and it was an epic fail. I was going to do 15 days, but I could not get sponsors and ended up narrowing it to 5 days.

I contacted about 60 companies telling them what I was doing trying to get them to donate a prize. I tweeted about it and announced it just like Jack said to. I had 2 companies respond with prizes. I had one respond from the tweet. An advertiser gave me some products to give away and I used them as part of the contest. And I ended up buying an expensive holster for the fifth prize.

I totally messed it up. I ended up having to ship everything and I only got about 50 entries and were on the last night.

First off my audiance was not big enough. Secondly 45 days was not nearly enough time. Even though I shortened it, still was not enough time.  Third 5 days is not enough time for people to find out about it and jump on board. It needs more time. I think 15-20 days like Jack said to do.

I'm going to possibly try again near Christmas, but I will more than likely wait till next fall. This contest in reality has set me back instead of moving me forward.

Just sharing my experiences so everyone can learn.
