WordPress Wizardry / CSS Sprites
« on: February 19, 2014, 04:37:07 PM »
Basically, does anyone have any experience with these.  I've been really digging down into the grinds on how to optimize my sites images.  I've come a long way, but sprites seem to be the next step.

I have used SpritePad to generate the sprites and the generic css that I should need, but I'm having trouble implementing it.  Sure, it's easy when you're throwing it up on a text editor, but actually implementing it into WP seems to be giving me a hard time.  I'm also not sure if I'll be able to overlap where the links originally were or if I'm going to need to hard code in the HTML to go along with the sprites.

Basically, if anyone has any experience using sprites, I'd appreciate a little guidance.

Thanks,

Jason

WordPress Wizardry / commentluv vs. livefyre vs... other?
« on: December 13, 2012, 01:17:56 PM »
On occasion I'll be scrolling through my RSS feeds, read a post, follow the comments, and find a commenter that has another article I want to read.  I know what you're saying...  "well duh!"  It just seems like lately I've been finding better comments and material and to some extent have been seeing better comment options.

So I want to improve such options on my own site.  I've always allowed do-follow and will be happy to do what I can to share the wealth so to speak.  I've come to the point where I'm happy with five visitors if that's five people who like my blog and I am NOT looking to drive traffic.  If that happens, great, but I don't want other backlink junkies drowning out the conversation.  What I really want is to allow those who take the time to read and put thoughtful comments to have some feedback to their own great work.

Both livefyre and commentluv seem to have some pros and cons.  So here I am asking you, the collective brilliance that is the 5MWJ community.  What do you use and WHY?  What are the pros and cons?  What would you recommend regardless of driving traffic?  Are some of the others out there just as good or better?

Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom!

WordPress Wizardry / flickr plugin
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:00:53 AM »
So, after hours of research I finally found something that worked for me...

First, there are a ton of flickr plugins that are outdated and useless.  I tried doing my homework before selecting a plugin by searching for reviews and they came up with some interesting stuff.  Tried to find out more about some of the plugins and ended up finding out that every one that actually did what I wanted it to do was obsolete.  --poopy--

Next step was to plug flickr into the plugin search box and just start weeding through them.

First one I came across was Photonic.  Sounded like it had some awesome features that I would love to have.  Of course with awesome features comes complication.  After about two hours of reading the support forums, all of which went way into the CSS, I finally decided this was not the plugin for me.

Then I came across Flickr set slideshow.  Pretty simple options.  On or off.  That's it!  Nothing fancy but it did exactly what I was looking for.   Requires API as do so many other things, and flickr's API access is a little confusing but that's the flickr end not the plugin.

That's it, I'm recommending "Flickr Set Slideshow" but if anyone else has some good ideas feel free to let me know.

Here is the post that I put all this effort into if anyone wants to see this plugin in action.  Hopefully I will have more use for flickr in the future.

Peer Review - Website Blog Critique / I like my feedback vicious!
« on: May 25, 2012, 02:23:22 PM »
Hellllooooo everyone!  I have just returned from my awesome vacation and ready to get to work on building the blog that I've been wanting to get started for some time now.  Aside from loosing my digital camera with most of my amazing pics on it, I got more than I bargained for from the vacation I am writing about.  My goal will be to post 3 X per week and hopefully have enough content to hold me off until my next vacation (where I hopefully won't loose my camera).  No need to be gentle on any feedback you feel like providing.  I've only got two posts in so far, but I want to run it buy you guys (the coolest guys ever!) before sending it out to anyone else.  Hoping to have 5-10 posts in before I even plant it on my own Facebook page.

Oh, and if anyone knows how to remove or move the theme credit in the footer (either through headway or wordpress) that would be a great help!

Thanks for any feedback!

Meet, Greet and Network / New Guy here
« on: March 17, 2012, 11:03:08 AM »
Hello All!  It's great to have the opportunity to be on this forum with all of you and I hope that I will be able to contribute to this as much as I receive, but I'm not counting on it.  I've been a TSP listener for...  I don't even know how long it's been.  Seems like TSP has just always been a part of my life even though I can remember the day that a buddy turned me on to podcasts and I found the show like it was yesterday.  I use the same name in the TSP forum and I'm guilty of reading far more than I write in there.  Maybe I can change that here.

I've read several other peoples intro posts and must admit that it seems like I'm in a bit of a different boat than most of the members whose intros I read.  I have a good job that I don't necessarily want to leave anytime soon.  I am hear because I love to learn and I would like to build some redundancy in my professional life in case I ever do decide to leave my current profession.

I do have a goal in mind that revolves around building a business, but it's more like a five year plan that I can't begin at the moment, so I've started another site just to learn on.  It's www.thoughtsfromme.com   I have just started blogging on it and it's really not focused at all.  So if you do happen to check it out, don't expect too much on the content side just yet.  I am really trying to field out all the tools and functions available to me and having a great time doing it.

Thus far I'm mostly following Jack's standing orders with some slight deviations.  I'm using Wordpress and working on adding some of the plugins recommended while testing some others out.  I'm using the "headway" theme which is a whole new system to learn unto itself, but fairly simple once you've got the hang of it.  I still have a lot of playing around to do with that as you'll notice if you check it out, but I really do like it.

And I guess that's really about it.  Feel free to let me know if I left anything out that you want to know.

Thanks for reading and I can't wait to interact more!
