Last November, my oldest son decided to make the transition from employee to self-employed.
He is an open source programmer.  Issue is he must market and promote his services along with doing the actual work.  And when one job ends you must have a new project ready to go.

With 4-6 weeks left to go with his current client, he came up with a month long project he wanted to develop.  Within 27 hours his project was funded, along with a job offer to continue his project while working for another company.  He declined the offer, wanting to stay independent.   He is thinking next time he will ask for more $ and finance a longer term project.

He never has a shortage of job offers, and several have wanted to build start up companies around his expertise.  His theory is that if his skills are that valuable, he can succeed on his own.  I can remember many years back discussions we'd have on ways to earn income writing code which you give away.

General Business Issues and Ideas / Start Garden

I like the way they are doing things to help new businesses get started.  If you are anywhere close to Grand Rapids check them out.  Also good to look at as a possible model for encouraging start ups in your area.

WordPress Wizardry / Great article on Backing up WordPress
« on: December 22, 2012, 11:48:16 PM »
One frustration I've had with wordpress backup plugins is that I don't want everything backed up daily.   Bumped into a great article on backing up Wordpress into daily, weekly and monthly folders, auto deleting the older ones.

Don't know how to embed videos, but check you the link, didn't know YouTube generates blogs for some sites!

Great post by a friend:

I had to go back and check my Facebook settings.  They are good.  I'd forgotten I'd changed the settings when Facebook ads started doing this.

WordPress Wizardry / WordPress Seo by Yoast and 404 issues
« on: July 25, 2012, 11:57:15 PM »
My category links were getting 404 errors which went away when I disabled WordPress SEO by Yoast.  Searching the forums I found a bandaid solution.   Read

You may or may not be having that problem, but I do suggest you check your category links.  I still love the plugin.

Selling Your Stuff / Kickstarter
« on: June 18, 2012, 09:44:57 AM »
I've seen several authors do well with Kickstarter, getting funding for a new book before it is written, giving ebook copies, signed hardback copies, consultation, etc.

Seth Godin just started one and has raised over twice his goal in a very short time   Now he has a brand and a following which makes this easier, but it is interesting to go through kickstarter and see what others have done.

Blog critique requested, using Dene's tips for better reviews and to set an example.  Please give feedback, especially those new to WordPress as my readers are also new to WordPress.

  • Can you find your way around?
  • Is the navigation easy to follow?
  • I have 2 lists.  One with daily getting started tutorials for a month.  The 2nd subscribes you to blog updates.  Is this clear or confusing?

Goals: I wanted a way for others to teach themselves WordPress, freeing up time for me, friends begged me to put one together for years.  I resisted as there are plenty of WordPress tutorials out there, but mine seem to appeal to my baby boomer friends.  Although I offer some WordPress services, that is not my main goal, more of a way to keep some income coming in for resource money to build and promote my own sites and to help with expenses at home. While putting these tutorials together, it has become more than I first imagined.  WordPress 101 for Boomers is part of a larger site which I'll be working on this summer.  Along with more content (later it will be a 1-2 times a week blog) I need to work on building traffic, more interaction.

Platform: WordPress

Any other tips welcome.

Social Networking Nirvana / Empire Avenue Event Tomorrow
« on: March 23, 2012, 09:12:15 AM »

Then you post your ea ticket in the right section tomorrow anytime after 10 am eastern, 24 hour event. Especially great for those new to empire avenue, it is a way to have people buy more shares and connect.   Those who've been around for a while and Eaves burning a hole in their pocket (they accumulate over time), it is a great way to meet new active members and invest in them.
