Search Engine Marketing / Google Analytics' Page load time
« on: October 15, 2012, 03:51:03 PM »
Google Analytics is telling me that my site's average load time is 8 seconds.

I haven't seen anything near that time. P3 is giving me a much lower time.

Is the GA time an "accepted industry standard" or is as much a guess as any tests I would run?

I can't have a site with a load time of 8 seconds... but I don't think I do.

Email Marketing / Benefits of 1 site with 4.8 million mailing lists
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:04:00 PM »
I'm subscribed to many email "newsletters" (They're mainly site update notifications and a couple email courses).

2 or 3 of them seem to want me to sign up for an additional mailing list every other week. Is there a real business benefit to this?

They already have me. They already have my email address. Just send me your pitch or your info or whatever. I'm not going to do a pentuple opt in.

WordPress Wizardry / Scheduling posts publishes them now
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:14:21 PM »
Here's one that has me stumped.

I'm sure many of you have scheduled posts that failed to publish immediately. I'm having the opposite problem.

While in an unpublished post, I select a date in the future and click OK. The publish button changes to schedule and I click it.

When the post reloads, the status is "Published" and the post is available on the front page with the future date. (Today, 7-25, I schedule a post for 8/1 and click schedule. It publishes even though the date 8/1 is visible on the front page.)

I'm going through the plugins and will try an alt theme if that doesn't work. Have any of you seen this before?

Thanks,

Josh

I'm just going to all it all out there. Warning: maximim verbosity.

I've been running the Got Prep podcast off and on for since mid '09. Earlier this year, I entered into a partnership to take the lessons learned from GP and add some more stuff and create Survival Training Online. Due to events beyond the control of everyone involved, the partnership quickly disbanded.

So, I had told the GP audience that GP was shutting down and everything was moving over to STO. Then I had to turn around and tell the STO audience that everything was on hiatus. That lined up with the birth of my 4th child about 2 months ago. I used that to buy some time.

I realized that even though I didn't have the juice to work on those 2 projects, I was still over here answering people's WordPress questions. So I started WP Vidcast.

Everything is going fine there. Having a blast. Helping people. It doesn't get much better than that except for there is no traffic, no one is watching my videos, and I haven't even gotten a "piss off" from any of the folks I've approached to guest post/postcast/vidcast. The silence is deafening.

And then I started getting emails from the GP audience. I hadn't even logged on to GP in months. Well, while I wasn't looking, my monthly downloads doubled. There wasn't a change to the number of visits, but that's part of a problem I'll talk about in a second.

The numbers still aren't super, but daily visits and monthly downloads are both over 3k and I haven't added anything in 2 months. There's a huge problem with the visitors. They're all coming for 4 or 5 articles written on guns. That is part of preparedness, but I have a bunch of other posts and 90 podcasts that aren't getting any love at all. (Like I understood keywords when I got started... like I really understand them now.)

So what do I do?

Do I run with the virginal WP Vidcast and hope that I'm doing things right?

Do I run with GP and hope that the podcast will eventually get people to the site for the reasons I want them there?

Do I give up on the idea of doing a daily show for either of them and do a couple of shows for each of them every week?

I'm really flustered. I good at all the tactical stuff. I SUCK at the strategic level planning and tasks.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Have any of you seen or tried using incremental sales pricing? You set a start price, an end price, and the increment. The system automagically adjusts the price with each sale.

For example, start price $1.00, end price $25, increment $.25.

The 1st sale is $1. The 2nd sale is $1.25. You'd need 97 sales to get to $25. That would net you ~$1250.

The theory is sound. It should create urgency... at first. Interesting. What do you think?

Love it or hate it. It is getting some love.

They're having a contest and you get bonus entries for tweeting the link, liking the page, and becoming a facebook fan (among other things). I don't know what they're future conversion rate will be, but it is a foot in the door.
